A no-nonsense guide to picking the right deadbolt.
Grade 1, 2, and 3
The BHMA grading system is the shorthand pros use. Grade 3 is minimum builder quality; Grade 2 is a solid residential upgrade; Grade 1 is commercial-strength for a home.
For Cape Coral front doors, aim for Grade 2 at minimum.
Single vs double cylinder
Single-cylinder deadbolts have a thumb-turn inside. Double-cylinder requires a key on both sides.
Double-cylinders reduce break-and-reach through glass but can be a fire code problem if you need to escape quickly.
Bump and pick resistance
High-security cylinders resist picking and bumping using tighter tolerances and specialty pin designs. Restricted keyways prevent unauthorized duplication.
These upgrades are common on high-value homes and rentals.
Smart deadbolts
Smart deadbolts add app control, code access, and logging. Look for a Grade 2 or better internal mechanism, not just fancy electronics on a weak lock body.
The mechanical strength should come first.
Installation notes
Installation matters as much as the lock itself. A great deadbolt with a weak strike plate is easily kicked in.
