How key fob programming works and when you can DIY versus when to call a pro.
What a fob does
A key fob is a small radio transmitter that talks to your vehicle's receiver. Modern fobs also carry a transponder chip for engine-immobilizer authentication.
Both radio pairing and chip pairing may need to be set up when you get a new fob.
DIY procedures
Some older vehicles allow manual programming via an ignition sequence: cycle on/off a specific number of times, press a specific button, etc.
Check your owner's manual before trying, and expect to only be able to program remotes you already own on.
Scan tool required
Many modern vehicles require an OBD-II scan tool with the right software subscription. Automotive locksmiths carry these and can pair fobs in minutes.
If you've already lost every fob, dealership or locksmith programming is almost certainly required.
Fob battery care
Change fob batteries proactively. Warning: the physical case can be sensitive, so use a plastic pry tool and match the battery orientation carefully.
A weak battery mimics a broken fob.
When to call a locksmith
Call a locksmith when DIY steps don't work, when adding a brand-new fob, or when programming needs to deactivate a lost fob.
